  • The Four Loves by C.S. Lewis

Okay, I just read "The Four Loves" by C.S. Lewis, and my mind was completely blown. Not only does Lewis masterfully engage the reader with his insightful perspective, but he also does it in a common sensical way that allows the reader to relate with what he's talking about.
I've always thought of him as a sort of modern day Paul the Apostle. He's definitely a pillar of the modern day Christian's life. God has used this man tremendously. I wish I could have had the opportunity to meet such a man while he was still alive.
He begins the small book by talking about the four different types of love: Storge, Phileo, Eros, and Agape. He explains how all the loves are unique and not necessarily love itself, but an outward exemplification of love.
He shares about Storge; familial love, or affection. He talks about how this love is bred between family members, a mother and a child, etc.
Next he moves onto Phileo; the love between friends. Like David and Jonathan in the Bible. It talks about close friends, not just acquaintances, who upon being reunited after several years, still share the same deep bond of binding friendship. He makes the distinction between sharing something in common with people whom one normally affiliate with in one's natural environment, and a friend who's death you would mourn for the rest of your life. I also found it interesting, that some people can go their entire life without truly experiencing this type of love. A person doe not need it to survive. Fascinating. Lewis describes this love in an interesting way. It was a truly deep, and spot on way of explaining what it is to be a real friend.
Then Eros; the romantic love between a man and a woman. In this chapter, Lewis states that this love differs exponentially from it's counterfeit opposite "Venus", or sexuality. Eros is the desire for the person them-self, not the pleasure that person could potentially give. It's the knowledge and acceptance that this one person is the one that you want, not for what they can give you, or you them, but for who they are, and how they are unlike anyone else in the entire world. It was a beautiful literary depiction.
And lastly, Agape; the love of God. Lewis leaves the reader in awe through his examination of the depth of the love of God and how it is unlike any other on the planet. People will spend years upon years searching for such a love, but deny to themselves and others their absolutely desperate dependancy on it, and their search for it. It's the only love that everyone in the world NEEDS. I just loved hearing the explanation of this love and God's heart for the world. The Lord seriously spoke through Lewis in the writing of this book, and I for one, thoroughly enjoyed walking alongside him in the journey through this small epistle on the different types of love.

There's a VERY brief overview...but just suffice it to say, I REALLY loved the book, and will be reading it often. It's always a good reminder of who we are in Christ and how love is SUPPOSED to be, how we're supposed to love. Incredible, just simply incredible.

  • Twitter!

    You know it~!

    Everyone's doing it...
Everyone has mixed feelings about it...
    Everyone's newest verb...
    Everyone's newest excuse...
    "Not right now! I'm....
    ...hee hee...
    ....tweeting"

That's right. The revolutionary website that has changed the world of social networking forever...by allowing you to answer one simple question: "What are you doing?"

Whether it be "Getting snot all over my face while trying to blow my nose" or "Just figured out that I still have water from Mexico in my backpack!", everyone wants their voice to be heard on this social networking tool. Even icons and very public figures such as President Obama, David Henry, Taylor Swift, and other teen *star* sensations (not to bag on Mr. President) are conforming to TWITTER! Even big name companies like Starbucks and Nordstrom's are utilizing this marketing opportunity!

So, what's the point? To tell you the truth...there really isn't one! :D Twitter is just a great way to connect with your friends in yet ANOTHER way and let them know that your dog just tripped over his leash while you were walking him in Chicago. A great tool, when used in moderation. No seriously, there's moderation. If you look up the terms and services, members are limited to 1,000 "Tweets" a day. AH, MAN! But if I could just TELL you what Granny's doing for the 1,001st time today my life would be COMPLETE!. Serioulsy. Who twitters that often?!

And horror of all horrors, you can only type 140 characters per tweet from the web and only 120 per text message! Sad, sad day! But what if I wanted to say "Having a bad hair day because its humid outside and that always makes my hair frizzy and this really cute guy I like always makes fun of me because of it....but now its okay because he said he'd buy me ice cream and I'm so excited I just had to twitter it!"? NOPE! Sorry, you'll have to condense it down to: "Having a bad hair day because its humid outside and that always makes my hair frizzy and this really cute guy I like always makes fun of me." SUCKS FOR YOU! HAHAHA

Sadly...there are still some drawbacks. I know, hard to believe. There are the well known and feared "Twitter Stalkers"...oh, you know who I'm talking about. The people whose sole purpose in life is to know what EVERYONE else in the WORLD was doing at that particular moment in time when Michael Jackson died. The people who are followed by maybe 21 other people (Who are doing so strictly for entertainment purposes) and are following, oh say, 5,396,041 people? Yeah...

When its all said and done (literally), Twitter is really a nice commodity...until you realize...horror of all horrors...that your mom's coon-huntin' great aunt's crazy neighbor from South Mississippi wants to follow you. The dilemma ensues: hurt your entire family's (and their neighbor's) feelings, or suffer eternal humiliation and ridicule from your friends. You choose the obvious option; post one last tweet letting everyone know that you're moving to New Finland and you won't be in touch for a really, really, really long time. Then you delete your account and create a new one under the alias of "John Smith" and invite all your friends to follow you on your new account.

My parent's asked the question "Is Twitter the same thing as Facebook?" (Something which neither of them have even CONSIDERED investing time in). My sister and I laugh demurely at their ignorance and inform them in our most condescending tones "Kind of...its like Facebook but without the pictures, movies, applications, notes, and walls. Its just to let people know what you're doing". That's the part where I twitter the reason why I'm grounded. Mom and Dad totally do NOT see the point of it. And that's the beauty in it. There doesn't have to be a point in letting all my friends know that I'm stuck at home memorizing lines for next week's skit. It may be pointless...but no one can say it isn't interesting! If this has offended anyone's sensibilities, you might want to consider joining Twitter...and perhaps start looking for your sense of humor; you probably lost it on myspace.

*sigh* Technology...if you can't beat it (which you can't), join it!

"Now finished blogging on xanga and off to do more interesting things worthy of my time." Oh, and there is the slight drawback of becoming addicted. Just a little warning ;)

    Awesome Song!

Wow...long time no blog? I know. And I tend to remedy that in the near future. I'll start with this...its an amazing song by Hillsong that I've recently become enthralled with. Enjoy :)

Falling on my knees in worship
Giving all I am to seek your face
Lord all I am is yours

    My whole life
    I place in your hands
    God of Mercy
    Humbled I bow down
In your presence at your throne

    I called you answered
And you came to my rescue and I
I wanna be where you are

In my life be lifted high
In our world be lifted high
In our love be lifted high

Came To My Rescue - Hillsong
